Reps to hold public hearing on widowhood, pension, age falsification bills June 27

The House of Representatives, through its Committee on Public Service Matters, has announced a public hearing on several legislative proposals and resolutions targeted at reforming Nigeria’s public service framework.

The hearing is scheduled for Friday, June 27, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. It will take place in Room 028 of the New Building, House of Representatives Wing, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

Among the items to be considered are the Widowhood Leave Bill, 2024 (HB. 401); the National Assembly Service Bill, 2025 (HB. 2056); and the National Assembly Service Pension Board (Establishment) (Amendment) Bill, 2025 (HB. 2240).

Other matters include a motion seeking the abrogation of the compulsory eight-year retirement policy for directors in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as motions on promotion stagnation and age falsification within the federal civil service.

Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Sani Umar Bala, said the hearing reflects the House’s commitment to participatory governance, institutional reform, and public accountability.

“This Public Hearing provides a crucial platform for public servants, legal experts, civil society organisations, and the general public to engage constructively with the legislative process,” he stated.

Rep. Bala added that the House remains focused on enacting reforms that promote meritocracy, fairness, and professionalism in the country’s public service.

He noted that the event aligns with the Legislative Agenda of the 10th Assembly and is part of efforts to ensure transparent, inclusive, and responsive lawmaking.
