The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, has elected a new executive committee to steer the affairs of the union for the next three years.
The election, which had previously been postponed three months ago, was finally held over the weekend, bringing an end to the tenure of the Caretaker Committee that was appointed in the interim.
Comrade Obinna Ogbuka of the Radio Nigeria Chapel emerged as the new chairman, succeeding Comrade Sam Udekwe of the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS), who withdrew from the race before the rescheduled election.
Comrade Chinedu Adonu of Vanguard Newspaper was elected Vice Chairman, defeating Regis Anukwuoji of Business Day.
Other elected officials include Suleiman Onyeama of the State Ministry of Information as Secretary, who defeated the immediate past Secretary, Ifeoma Amita, and Fred Nnaji of ESBS, who emerged unopposed as Assistant Secretary.
Stephanie Ude of the Federal Ministry of Information clinched the position of Treasurer, defeating Chinyere Agbo of the State Information Chapel. Sandra Ukeje of Solid FM won the position of Financial Secretary, beating Adaku Agbara of Radio Nigeria. Florence Ani emerged as Auditor, defeating Uchenna Nnamene of the NTA Chapel.
In his acceptance speech, the new Chairman, Comrade Obinna Ogbuka—former Chairman of the Radio Nigeria Chapel—pledged to prioritize the welfare of journalists and unify the union.
“With my emergence as Chairman of NUJ Enugu Council, a new administration has begun. We are here to serve the interests of all members and take NUJ to greater heights. I seek the cooperation and support of all to enable us to succeed,” he said.
He commended the electoral committee for conducting a credible and transparent election.
The election was supervised by the Zonal Secretary of NUJ Zone C, Ezenwafor Adiukwu, who represented the National Secretariat. Adiukwu praised the maturity and decorum displayed by members during the exercise and called for collective support for the newly elected executives.
