Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Toyin Abraham-Ajeyemi, has described herself as a “prophet,” claiming her movies are not just for entertainment but also serve as a form of healing for viewers.
She made this known on Thursday via her official Instagram page, where she shared a screenshot of a message from a therapist who revealed she used Abraham’s latest film, Iyalode, as part of a client’s therapy session.
According to the therapist’s message, the elderly client felt emotionally uplifted and encouraged after watching the film during their counselling time together.
Reacting to the message, Abraham wrote, “I just don’t shoot movies, I’m a Prophet and I speak and heal people through my Movies. IYALODE is still showing in cinemas in Nigeria, pls find time to watch and be blessed.”
The film Iyalode, which premiered in cinemas on June 6, crossed the ₦100m mark within its first four days of release, solidifying its position as one of the biggest cinema openers of the year.
Co-produced by Toyin Abraham and her husband, Kolawole Ajeyemi, and directed by Adebayo Tijani, the historical drama stars Gabriel Afolayan, Muyiwa Ademola, Ibrahim Chatta, Kehinde Bankole, Peju Ogunmola, Bukky Wright, Wale Ojo, and Aisha Lawal, among others.
The story follows the life of Asabi Adikaka, a fierce warrior in the fictional village of Kulende, as she battles betrayal and legacy curses in her quest for justice. Iyalode dives deep into themes of power, tradition, gender roles, and the cost of leadership.
The film also continues a growing movement in Nollywood of centring women in period and political dramas, offering deeper narratives that celebrate female strength and resilience.
