NHEA 2025 to recognise health facilities under PharmAccess SafeCare categories

The Nigerian Healthcare Excellence Award (NHEA) has introduced two categories under its long-running collaboration with the PharmAccess Foundation for the 2025 awards cycle, focusing on healthcare facilities that have engaged with the SafeCare Quality Platform. The initiative, which enters its tenth year, is part of ongoing efforts to measure and support quality improvement within Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

The categories—PharmAccess Most Active Public Facility and PharmAccess Most Active Private Facility on the SafeCare platform—aim to acknowledge public and private hospitals that have demonstrated consistent use of the SafeCare methodology and maintained strong performance metrics. Facilities nominated in the public category include Orile Agege General Hospital, Ikorodu General Hospital, Ibeju-Lekki General Hospital, and Lagos Island Maternity Hospital.

The private category features South Shore Women’s and Children’s Hospital, R-Jolad Hospital, Lifeline Children Hospital, and Lakeshore Cancer Centre.

The evaluation process, according to the organisers, was driven by data from the SafeCare platform, which benchmarks clinical standards using internationally recognised indicators. Developed through collaboration with the Joint Commission International (JCI) and the Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa (COHSASA), the SafeCare model is tailored for healthcare settings in low-resource environments and provides a structured path to measurable quality improvement.

Speaking on the continued partnership, Njide Ndili, Country Director of PharmAccess Foundation Nigeria, noted that the selected facilities reflect a deliberate approach to quality monitoring and patient safety.

“The SafeCare methodology promotes structured quality improvement,” Ndili said. “These nominees have demonstrated a clear commitment to enhancing patient safety and clinical excellence. We are proud to continue this partnership with NHEA in recognizing healthcare providers who are using data and innovation to improve outcomes.”

Ndili further stated that the organisation’s support for the award category over the past decade is part of a broader effort to strengthen competition and accountability in Nigeria’s health sector. “We have supported these awards for the last 10 years as a contribution to catalyze healthy competition to improve the health system in Nigeria,” she added.

Dr. Wale Alabi, Project Director of NHEA, described the SafeCare category as one of the platforms through which the awards body seeks to reinforce positive performance and system-wide change.

“Our collaboration with PharmAccess has played a crucial role in transforming the narrative around quality healthcare delivery in Nigeria,” Alabi said. “This award category continues to encourage a culture of accountability, improvement, and innovation.”
